The idea to found Railway history museum first appeared during the founding conference of All-union society of railway amateurs in 1990. After recovery of Latvia independence in 1992 a position of museum director was formed and it was the start of materials and facts gathering for the purpose of forming a museum. The first exposition was opened 5 August, 1994 - at 75th anniversary of Latvian railway. The premises at Uzvaras boulevard where the museum is located now were granted in 1996. In the Latvian Railway history museum you can view exhibitions on world’s railway development history starting from invention of stem locomotive. Separate exhibitions are devoted to Latvian railway developments and local innovative solutions. It is possible to see personnel rooms, maintenance tools for rolling-stock, fire extinguishing equipments and many other things. In open-air exhibition on four track roads there are locomotives, wagons and maintenance equipment that were produced on the former territory of USSR and in other countries in different time periods. A part of exhibit is still actively used for the needs of the railway. Exposition in The Latvian Railway history museum is available also for people in wheelchairs. There is a car parking lot, bike parking lot and a place for buses.
